Since mental health awareness has existed (societies) medical professionals and researchers have sought after safe and effective treatment for depression. Unfortunately, there is no single treatment for depression which has been proven to work for everyone as it can be a very complex ailment.

Depression is most commonly treated with antidepressant medications but many experience unwanted side effects and minimal therapeutic benefit. However, there is a successful alternative treatment for depression available. An effective, alternative treatment for depression is transcranial magnetic stimulation  (TMS) Therapy. TMS Therapy has proven to provide benefit for people who have not received benefit from antidepressant medications or that cannot tolerate the side effects.

Cascade TMS offers TMS Therapy which is an  FDA approved treatment for patients suffering from depression who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medications.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy uses short pulses of magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells.  Cascade TMS focuses on the area of the brain thought to control mood.

TMS is non-invasive.  It does not involve surgery, anesthesia or sedation.  The patient remains awake and alert during the treatment. TMS is non-systemic.  It is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the bloodstream throughout the body. TMS is FDA cleared for patients who have not benefited from prior antidepressant treatment.

What is TMS Therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy is an effective, alternative treatment for medication-resistant depression. TMS Therapy is an FDA approved treatment for individuals suffering from Major Depressive Disorder and treatment-resistant depression.

TMS Therapy is a non-invasive outpatient procedure performed in-office. The treatment does not require sedation or anesthesia. During treatment the patient is alert and post-treatment the patient is able to easily resume their daily activities, including driving to and from treatment.

TMS Therapy uses focused magnetic pulses to non-invasively stimulate the brain in the prefrontal cortex which is the region of the brain through the scalp to the area associated with mood regulation, attention, decision making, and planning life in general.

TMS Therapy is a focal, non-systemic and utilizes MRI-strength magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain which have been identified for the treatment of depression. TMS Therapy changes electrical activity resulting in increased neuroplasticity and improved functionality.

These magnetic pulses pass through the hair, scalp, and skull (approximately 2-3 cm) and into the prefrontal cortex. This method allows for localized stimulation, minimizing the stimulation of areas of the brain which are not involved in mood regulation. The typical treatment course is daily treatments five days a week over a 4-6 week period for a total of 36 treatments. Each treatment session lasts between 20 minutes.

Off label uses including anxiety relief, OCD, substance use, autism, and many other treatment uses are currently being explored with promising results.

Is TMS right for me?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy is an effective, alternative treatment for medication-resistant depression. TMS Therapy is an FDA approved treatment for individuals suffering from Major Depressive Disorder or treatment-resistant depression, meaning patients suffering from depression who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant treatment and psychotherapy.

TMS Therapy is contraindicated in individuals with a history of seizures or ferromagnetic implants or devices in or around the head.

If you have any questions regarding the contraindications please reach out at (503) 433-3200 for additional information.
